Five Steps for Taking Care of Your Designer Jewelry

Five Steps for Taking Care of Your Designer Jewelry

From the very beginning, ShopLuxury has set out to prove that buying pre-owned jewelry doesn’t have to mean settling for lower quality. Thanks to the rigorous verification process that each piece of jewelry undergoes before we list it in our online store, we offer all of our customers a complete lifetime authenticity guarantee. Your piece will also arrive to you in pristine condition.

The process doesn’t stop when the jewelry arrives at your door, however. Keeping your jewelry in pristine condition is not a huge challenge, but it is important to keep the following tips and techniques in mind so that your pieces remain as beautiful and captivating as when you first bought them. With proper care, jewelry by iconic designers can provide a lifetime of beauty and pleasure.

  • 1. Store each piece of jewelry separately.

  • Whether in person or in movies, we’ve all seen someone who keeps all of her jewelry together in a single box or drawer. Invariably, this leads to the obvious problem of chains and clasps getting into a tangled and frustrating mess. Even more problematic in the long term, however, is the fact that the bands and even the diamonds and stones themselves can suffer scratches and abrasion when stored together. To avoid this, simply store your pieces in individual pouches or jewelry boxes.

    2. Put on your makeup before your jewelry.

Whether you are preparing for a big day at work or getting ready for a memorable night

out on the town, be sure to put everything else on your skin before your jewelry. The chemicals found in most cosmetics can damage metals, pearls, and other kinds of jewelry. The same goes for hairspray, perfume, and lotion.

    3. Clean your jewelry regularly.

Like anything else, your jewelry is susceptible to dust, grime, and other corrosive debris over time. You can bring your jewelry to a professional to have it cleaned, or if you prefer to do it yourself, just be sure to use a brush in soapy water followed by a rinse with only water. Soap from washing your hands or taking a shower can create a film on the diamonds, so it is important to always make sure the final rinse is with water only.

    4. If you have any concerns, send us a picture so we can advise you.

Some issues with a piece of jewelry are easy to spot. If you notice a loose stone or a missing prong, for example, it is certainly best to repair that right away and get your piece back into prime condition. You are always welcome to send us photos of jewelry you bought from us for input from one of our experts on whether we would recommend a repair. If you have a pearl necklace or bracelet, bring it to a professional every 1-3 years to have it evaluated for re-stringing.

    5. Use discretion when wearing your jewelry during certain activities.

We recommend that you remove your jewelry before gardening, cleaning, working in the kitchen, playing sports, working out, walking the dogs, or getting in a jacuzzi or spa. Admittedly, a fair number of these are just a matter of common sense, but the rule of thumb is to think twice before doing any activity and ask yourself if it’s possible that it could damage your jewelry. If the answer is Yes or Maybe, take it off first!

Keeping these tips in mind, you should be able to keep your cherished pieces in excellent shape for years to come.
